The project will deliver greater road safety, reduced vehicle wear and tear and reduced transport costs.

The Karratha-Tom Price Road will ultimately extend to approximately 270 kilometres and link two of the region’s most prosperous mining town’s – Karratha at the northern end and Tom Price at the southern end.

Key Benefits

Apart from the tourism benefits, the project will deliver:

  • greater road safety through delivery of a sealed road of superior design and layout;
  • reduction of vehicle wear and tear;
  • reduced transport costs for the mining and pastoral industries along with private motorists through provision of a more direct route between Karratha, Tom Price and the central Pilbara; and
  • greatly reduced road closures following significant rain events.

Project Schedule

Stage 1 of Karratha-Tom Price Road, a 25 kilometre section between Tom Price and the Nanutarra-Munjina Road, was completed in 2003.

Major construction work on Stage 2, a 90-kilometre section between North West Coastal Highway at Karratha and the Roebourne Wittenoom Road at Barowanna Hill, commenced in June 2006 and is due for completion by 2008.

The timing of Stages 3 and 4, extending 158 kilometres from Roebourne-Wittenoom Road at Barowanna Hill to the Nanutarra-Munjina Road about 25kms north of Tom Price, is yet to be finalised.
