The design of Stage 2 is being continuously refined to reduce the area of ground disturbance.

Managing Impacts

Western Australia’s Minister for the Environment granted environmental approval for Stages 2 to 4 of Karratha - Tom Price Road in April 2005, subject to a range of design, construction and operational management conditions.

Environmental Management Plans (EMPs) are being finalised for Stage 2 construction activities in order to comply with environmental conditions and to ensure appropriate environmental management standards are achieved before and during construction.

Landscape and Flora

The northern reaches of the alignment lie within a flat, grassy landscape which is interrupted by lines of small hills while the southern end of Stage 2 passes through the Chichester Ranges, consisting of rugged, rocky hills with dissecting valleys. The vegetation is relatively sparse and low, with a dominance of Spinifex, other grasses, scattered shrubs and small trees. Most of the flora and vegetation types are well represented throughout the region, however impacts to the Millstream-Chichester National Park will need to be managed.

Several watercourses such as Western Creek, the Harding River and associated tributaries intersect the alignment. Environmental impacts resulting from activities associated with pre-construction are expected to be minimal and easily managed.

Control of weeds, particularly the aggressive Ruby Dock, is an important part of Stage 2 of the project. Locations of Ruby Dock have been mapped and are regularly monitored. An extensive program to stop the spread and reduce the areas affected is being undertaken.
